Definition
"Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have normal emotional responses, and to behave normally in social situations" (MedlinePlus).

Causes - The causes are not known, but genetics and environmental factors appear to be contributing factors. People who have close relatives with schizophrenia are more likely to get it themselves.

What is it not? (Common misunderstanding)
Schizophrenia is NOT the same as multiple or split personality even though the etymology of the word comes from the Greek word for "split" and "mind."

A Beautiful Mind - Plot summary
"From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash, Jr. experienced it all. A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over his tragedy, and finally - late in life - received the Nobel Prize." Written by

Connections with A Beautiful Mind

  • "Social and family support appears to improve the illness." (MedlinePlus) Only with his wife's support did Nash improve and eventually go on to earn a Nobel Prize.
  • "Schizophrenia is a complex illness. Even experts in the field are not sure what causes it" (MedlinePlus) Nash was working in one of the best universities in the world and had resources beyond what most people would have, but they still couldn't completely explain or control his illness.
  • "As the illness continues, //psychotic// symptoms develop...Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there (hallucinations)" (MedlinePlus) Nash began "seeing" his old college roommate, even when he wasn't there. He also "saw" men from the FBI who were supposedly expecting him to do top secret work for the government. This delusion lasted for many years, and he never fully overcame it. He just learned how to live with it.
  • "The ability of people with schizophrenia to function normally and to care for themselves tends to deteriorate over time" (MayoClinic.com) Especially in the early years, Nash became slowly, progressively worse until he was no longer able to do his normal work.
  • "Schizophrenia is a chronic condition, requiring lifelong treatment" (MayoClinic.com) Nash was never fully cured, but with his wife's help, he learned to function in the world and maintained the respect he had earned as a brilliant mathematician.
